II. Significant Accomplishments

Significant accomplishments at RAP during 1995 include:

• Development of a prototype Operational Wind Shear Warning System for the new Hong Kong airport, including development of wind shear and turbulence algorithms;

• A study on the meteorological conditions associated with the 31 October 1994 ATR72 aircraft accident near Roselawn, Indiana;

• Development of a technique to remotely detect supercooled liquid water layers using K-band radar and a microwave radiometer;

• Development of a new robust Microburst Automatic Detection (MAD) algorithm ;

• A synoptic study on areas of preferred aircraft icing ;

• A demonstration of a snowfall and de-icing display system at Stapleton and Denver International Airports;

• Development of a real-time system to automatically nowcast thunderstorm growth, movement and decay (auto-nowcaster) ;

• Evaluation of the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) hail algorithm , and;

• Development of new, more robust wind profiler algorithms that deal with a number of contamination sources.
