Resilient and Sustainable Cities

Urban areas play crucial roles in the arena of climate and global environmental change, not only as key sources of carbon and other air pollutants, but also as hotspots of vulnerability to water scarcity, floods, heat waves, and other hazards that climate and global change is expected to aggravate. These roles create a unique opportunity for cities to prove their talents as sources of innovations, and laboratories not only for adaptation responses but also for the transition to different and more sustainable – i.e. less carbon intensive and more resilient – pathways of urban development.

The main goal of Resilient and Sustainable Cities (RS–Cities) is to explore crucial intersections between urban development and the environment, including the carbon cycle, the climate system and the water cycle. In particular, RS–Cities addresses key issues of:
- How urban development impacts the environment (drivers)
- What societal factors explain cities’ vulnerability/resilience to climate variability, atmospheric pollution and other stresses (impacts)
- How particular cities attempt to meet the challenges of reducing emissions while improving their capacity to cope with environmental impacts (responses)
