InFlight Icing
Where are we, what are the gaps?
  • Marcia K. Politovich
  • FAA IFIPDT Lead
  • NCAR
2
InFlight Icing
  • Supercooled liquid water
    • In clouds and precipitation
  • Cloud vs. SLD
    • Are SLD conditions present? (flag)
  • Severity
    • Need estimate of LWC, very rough estimate of drop size (cloud vs. SLD is probably good enough)
  • Type?
3
"“Except for an airplane..."
  • “Except for an airplane that has ice protection provisions that meet part 34 of Appendix A, or those from transport category airplane type certification, no pilot may fly
  • Under IFR into known or forecast light or moderate icing conditions; or
  • Under VFR into known light or moderate icing conditions…”

What are the gaps?
  • Cloud identification
    • Cloud top height and temperature still a problem
    • Clouds overlying snow or ice surfaces
    • Nighttime and terminator problems

  • Cloud composition: not every cloud with T<-40oC is an icing cloud(!)
    • phase product: information on cloud phase near its top
    • LWP/IWP: can add information

What you’ll see and hear today
  • Description of the satellite products (Minnis)
  • Impressions from forecasting (Bernstein and Wolff)
  • Benchmarking skill of satellite and CIP products (Chapman)
  • Some aircraft/product comparisons (Wolff)
  • Additional work on aircraft/product comparisons (Haggerty)
  • Using the products to improve RUC mphysics (Benjamin)
  • Icing and supercomputing (Nguyen)
  • And… TAMDAR (Daniels)
