Background
n For thousands of years people have sought to modify weather and
climate so as to augment water resources and mitigate severe weather.
n The modern technology of weather modification was launched by the
discovery in the late 1940’s that supercooled cloud droplets could be
converted to ice crystals by insertion of seeding material.
n For warm clouds, large hygroscopic particles have been used to initiate
the so-called warm rain process earlier.
n Recently smaller hygroscopic particles have been used to affect the
initial droplet spectra near cloud base.
n Over 50 years of subsequent research have greatly enhanced our
understanding of precipitation processes but major gaps remain.
