MESONET and SOUNDINGS

Mesonet and sounding data can be obtained from conventional weather service data sources (e.g. ASOS and 00Z/12Z soundings) or from special data sources. The data are used to:

• Initialize a numerical model (along with a radar-derived wind field known as TREC) that produces forecasts of boundary-layer convergence lines,
  
  
• Calculate a lifted index field and
  
  
• Determine steering flow for advection of cumulus clouds.
