VII Feasibility and Concept Development Report

OBJECTIVE

To develop an understanding of the feasibility of utilizing VII weather-related data elements in weather application development.

DESCRIPTION

The automotive industry is making significant technological advances in the areas of vehicle environmental sensing and vehicle responsiveness to road conditions. As a result of these developments, direct measurements of environmental variables such as temperature and pressure are becoming more readily available, while indirect assessment of elements such as precipitation, cloudiness, fog, and pavement conditions is also being made possible.

The Research Applications Laboratory, with support from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation ITS Joint Program Office, is investigating ways of deriving weather and road condition information from vehicle data elements. To this end, efforts are underway to:

• Develop an understanding of current and anticipated vehicle data elements
• Conduct analysis regarding quantity, quality and timeliness of data elements
• Investigate single and multi element requirements for application development and enhancement
• Investigate methods of combining vehicle data elements and other data
• Conduct workshops to facilitate weather related VII discussions

MAIN PROJECT SPONSOR
