The Use of Infrared Laser Doppler Radar During Wild-fire Fire Fighting Operations

Abstract: On June 12, 2000, upon receiving news of the rapid spread of the High Meadows Forest Fire near Pine Junction, Colorado, officials at nearby Lafayette CO-based Coherent Technologies, Inc. moved quickly to offer to deploy the company's WindTracer® to assist in fire-fighting efforts. In record time, the WindTracer's theoretical ability to assist in fire fighting efforts by characterizing local wind conditions in real time was practically demonstrated.

Upon receiving news of the rapid spread of the nearby High Meadows forest fire on June 12, 2000, Lafayette, Colorado-based Coherent Technologies, Inc. (CTI) moved quickly to donate the services of its advanced WindTracer® Infrared Doppler Radar to fire behavior experts at the sight of the fire. Within hours, the WindTracer® was deployed to a location just off of Highway 285 in Pine Junction, Colorado. This location provided clear viewing of the most active portions of the fire along Highway 126 and toward the towns of Pine and Buffalo Creek.
