Friday 7th February Dan Johnson 0920 Leave RAP operations center. Foggy conditions. 0932 At 63 Rd. on way to Longmont, small water droplets are observed in the fog. Visibility is about 1/8 mile. Appears that fresh snow has fallen just recently. 0941 Entering Longmont. Snow begins to fall. Crystals observed from the van are stellars and small pristine crystals. 0945 Snow showers in Longmont 1018 ARRIVE AT DESTINATION. Equipment set up 13.3 km at 15 degrees from K-band. This is also 10 km ENE from Longmont at the intersection of 32 Rd. and 7 Rd, 1 mile from Hwy. 66 and Int. 25. 1021 Winds are from the ENE and are very light ( < 5 mph ). Snowfall is very light also. Initial snow types appear to be stellars and dendritic crystals which are slightly rimed. Size of crystals are between 1 and 3 mm in diameter. 1023 Chemistry sample #1 begins. 1025 Oil Slide #1 is set outside. New Skin was not used on slides during this case. 1028 Some aggregates are starting to fall 1029 Oil Slide #1 finished, put in brake fluid. 1032 Oil Slide #2 begins 1035 Oil Slide #2 completed 1040 Snow falling lightly. Snow sample #1 taken. This case is producing very good crystals to be photographed. Crystals do not merge together as in other cases and have well defined appearance: Sector branches Plate with stellar branches and plates on branches heavily rimed Stellar crystal with riming Stellar with plates on ends and in middle Pristine stellars Large plates on ends of stellar branches 1054 Snow sample #2. Winds blowing very lightly from the NE. Snow falling lightly: Sector with large plates on end of branches Sector with large droplets on it Plate with sector-like extensions and rimed Same but lightly rimed Two stellars together 1106 Oil Slide #3 begins 1109 Oil Slide #3 completed 1114 Snow sample #3. Winds are NE and very light. Snow is falling very lightly. Little change in wind direction and intensity and in snowfall so far: Heavily-rimed stellar with long branches approx. 2 mm dia. Heavily-rimed stellar with plates on ends. Some with very large plates. Riming is on edge of branches. Stellar with long branches with plates on end of branches Crystal 2-3 mm in dia. Sector branches with large plates on end. Side planes also on ends of branches with riming. Dendritic crystal with fern-like branches. Some branches are missing, large cloud droplets on branches. Plate with sector-like extension. Lightly rimed Broad branched crystal approx. 1 mm dia. 1125 Chemistry sample #1 completed. The sample appears to have some dust in it possible from the road. New chemistry samples will be taken at a different location. 1126 Wind has shifted to a more northerly direction 1138 Chemistry sample #2 begins at location further from road on upwind side to avoid contamination with dust from road. 1139 Snow sample #4. Wind is back to northeasterly and light. Snow is still very light: Stellar with plates on branches Sector plates with plates on branches, highly rimed Aggregate of stellars with long branches and very highly rimed Sector plate with no riming Stellar with side planes on two of branches only. Approx. 3 mm in dia. Some riming. Crystal with 4 branches stellar with plates on end. Other branches sector plates that are rimed. Broad-branched plate with tiny plate between two branches Crystal is rimed. 1158 Wind from NE. Snow falling lightly but a little more heavily than previous 30 min. Wind is a little stronger now. 1158 Oil Slide #4 begins 1203 Oil Slide #4 completed 1206 Wind has changed to the SE 1206 Snow sample #5. Wind is SE and light, but heavier than 30min. ago. Snow is falling lightly: Very large stellar, plates on branches and on end, rimed. Assemblage of stellars with plates on end of branches. Unrimed plates < 1mm in dia. Plate with short broad branches Stellar with very long branches that are > 1 mm length, rime on branches. Stellar with very large plates on end of branches A branch fragment from a crystal. 1223 Wind ENE at approximately 5 mph 1225 Chemistry sample #2 taken. Can only take one now since the snow is falling very lightly. 1235 Wind from the East. Clouds breaking and sun beginning to appear. 1236 Snow sample #6. Wind East and very light. Snow falling very lightly. Little change in snowfall rate since we have arrived here: Fern-like dendrite Small plates Stellar - half of branches with little plates, some rime on branches. Stellar with plates on branches only, some riming Big aggregate made up of stellar crystals, rimed with plates and side planes Broad-branched crystal Half crystal with 3 branches Stellar with pointed branches 1244 Chemistry sample #3 taken. This was supposed to be the same one as #2 taken at 1225 (two chemistry samples are taken at the same time), but had to wait about 20 min to gather enough get a sample. 1245 Winds have increased from the East but still relatively light 1303 Snow sample #7. Winds east and light. Snow is falling very lightly. Crystals appear to be getting smaller in sizes: Rimed plate with short broad branches Pristine plate Capped column on end of stellar dendrite, small plate on end, rimed some, column appears to be hollow Sector crystal with very light rime, 3 sector branches< 1 mm. Sector plate with large plates on end of branches, fern shaped tiny plates off branches A few hollow columns "Fly"-shaped fragments Small stellar crystals. 1316 Oil Slide #5 begins 1319 Oil Slide #5 completed 1319 Snow has almost stopped falling. We are packing up and heading back to RAP.
