Thursday 24th March Dan Johnson On this mission was John Cardwell and Dan Johnson 0750 Light snow starting to fall at NCAR 0754 Very small heavily rimed dendrites approximately 1 mm dia. falling. Also very small heavily rimed dendritic aggregates falling. 0755 We leave NCAR and go to K-band site. 0820 Snow has stopped falling as we approach the K-band site. 0824 ARRIVE AT THE K-BAND SITE. No snow if falling. Skies are overcast. There is a darker band of clouds to the south of us. 0845 No snow has fallen yet. Sky is getting brighter. Very thin stratus layer of clouds. Looks like there will not be any snowfall here. 0855 Low clouds which are thicker near the foothills to the west. Perhaps the upper-level flow which is from the SW will advect some crystals and snow our way? Winds are northerly and light (about 5 mph). 0906 The cloud layer over us is becoming thicker. Low stratocumulus near foothills is approximately 2000 ft. AGL at base or 7500 ft. MSL. Top of SC clouds is about 8500 ft. MSL 0919 The sky is getting brighter. The clouds are very thin. 0928 The sky is very bright. Still overcast but extremely thin higher layer of clouds. Can see contrails through the clouds even. 0930 We are leaving the K-band site and heading back to NCAR.
