Friday 25th March John Cardwell On this mission was John Cardwell and Dan Johnson 1330 At NCAR. DARE station indicating cold surge moving from the north towards NCAR. It is now near Ft. Collins and moving south. 1355 Leave NCAR. Skies mostly broken - cumuliform clouds. Skies to the north are overcast in the direction in which we are going. 1418 Two miles west of Longmont. Skies are broken and the sun is out. Large area of blue skies above us. Can see virga to the north and northeast of us. Clouds there are lower and may be on the edge of the cold surge. 1429 One mile north of Hwy. 66 on Hwy. 287 we see a dust devil in a field. Clouds associated with surge about 10 miles north of us. 1440 Heading east on Hwy. 56 from Berthoud. 1445 Very light rain falling one mile east of INT 25 on Hwy. 56 Sun is out though. We are instructed by Op. Center to head towards Platteville. 1511 ARRIVE AT SITE - 1/2 mile N of 38 Rd. on 23 Rd. 3 1/2 miles N of Platteville LATITUDE - 40 degrees 16' 33" LONGITUDE - 104 degrees 51' 17" 1515 Darker convective clouds to the N and W. Virga over foothills. Broken Skies over us still. Sun is now just going through the clouds. Virga about 20 miles west. Winds from the N 10-15 mph. Mild outside. Temp about 59 F. Measured initial temp. is 15 C! 1526 Sky is overcast over us. Clear patch of sky has moved to the east. Darker patch of clouds coming our way from the W. We may get some light rain from it. 1532 Winds NE about 15 mph and sustained. Seeing lots of virga near foothills WSW to NW. Temp still +15 C! 1536 Virga reaching ground about 10 miles to the west of us. 1542 Winds from the ENE about 15 mph. Temp. is +14.2 C 1547 Virga is getting closer to us. About 7.5 miles to the west. Sun shining to the west of the virga on the Rockies. Skies broken to the west of the virga. Temp. is 13.6 C. Seeing long line of virga running E-W about 15 miles north of us. Not much vertical extension on that line of virga though. 1600 Winds have shifted to the NNW and windy - 15-20 mph. Temp. is 12.7 C 1602 Getting a few raindrops as virga approaches. The rain stopped right away. 1608 Winds are NNE about 20 mph. Temp. is 11.8 C. Virga surrounding us on all sides. 1612 Sun almost through clouds to the west. Appears to be much less virga to the west now than earlier. 1615 A few drops are falling again. Winds N about 15-20 mph and gusty. Virga is going over us. Sun is completely out to the west of us. Temp. is 11.2 C. 1617 Precipitation sample is taken: Photo # what seen #1,2,3 600 micron drop #4 500 micron drop #5 500 micron drop 1623 Extremely thin cirrostratus layer overhead. There is a patch of blue skies overhead. 1624 Droplets have stopped falling. Temperature is about 12 C. 1630 Leave site. Heading back to NCAR. Skies are broken and large clear patch to the west. We see 1/2 of rainbow to the east.
