RAL's Verification program assesses the quality of the widely-varied
products under development by RAL's Oceanic Weather Product Development
Team. These products focus on the forecast and diagnosis of aviation weather hazards over
oceans, including convection, turbulence, volcanic ash, and aircraft icing, among others.
Of particular importance for the quality assessment of these products is the need for observations that are independent of the data used in creating the products over these data-sparse regions. This need drives the development and application of verification techniques, using a combination of remotely-sensed, ground-based, ship-based, and in situ datasets. For more information regarding specific assessment activities over oceanic areas, see: The Verification of Oceanic Weather Cloud-Top Height Predictions Research Lead: Barbara G. Brown |
