Current Projects and Service
- Hazard Response and Preparedness of Pet Care Professionals (no link yet): This NSF-sponsored Quick Response Grant is identifying opportunities to improve the planning, coordination and communication process for animals and pet care providers during extreme weather events. The field component was conducted Sep 10-13, 2008, in New Orleans and focused on Hurricane Gustav.
- The National Weather Service (NWS) Service Assessment for the Record Flooding in the Central United States in June 2008 (no link yet): The objective of this service assessment is to enhance the ability of the NWS to serve its constituencies by preparing a report of recommendations and best practices. The focus areas of the assessment are the meteorological and hydrologic nature of the event and its impacts; the end-to-end forecast process involving the NWS, U.S. Geological Survey, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; the accuracy and effectiveness of service; the interagency collaboration in the forecast process; the usefulness of the tools and data in the forecast process; and the societal perceptions, impacts, and responses to the forecasts.
- Cryospheric Climate Data Records (no link yet): This NASA- and NOAA-sponsored project is producing state-of-the-art blended Northern Hemisphere terrestrial snow and sea ice CDRs in multiple formats and on multiple time steps for the research community, decision-makers, and stakeholders.
- The WAS*IS Compendium (no link yet): This NCAR-sponsored project is producing an on-line compendium to highlight successful integrations of social science and weather/climate, and to draw attention to cooperative efforts among various partners in the weather/climate enterprise.
- The January 4-6, 2008, Western USA winter storm (no link): This NSF-sponsored Quick Response Grant is investigating respondents' main sources for obtaining weather and warning information for the January 4-6, 2008, western USA winter storm; respondents' perceptions of the accuracy of the weather forecast; and their decision-making processes during the storm.
- Arctic Regional Ice Forecasting System: This is a NASA-sponsored project looking at Lagrangian tracking of sea-ice conditions and providing probabilistic sea-ice forecasts.
- The AMS Board on Societal Impacts: The AMS Board on Societal Impacts focuses on the principle of science in the service of society by considering weather and climate effects on lives, health and well-being, property, and the economy for all people, animals, and the Earth.
Recently Completed Projects
- New Generation Polar Research: This NSF-sponsored project is also an International Polar Year project to catalyze formation of a vibrant, international and interdisciplinary community of polar researchers working collectively to extend polar research frontiers across the natural and social sciences and communicate their research to non-specialist audiences.
- The December 20-21, 2006, Colorado Front Range winter storm (no link): This NSF-sponsored "quick response grant" is investigating respondents' main sources for obtaining weather information for the December 20-21, 2006, winter storm; whether respondents stayed home on December 20, and if so, what information and characteristics influenced that decision; and what were the respondents' perceptions of the accuracy of the weather forecast. - The Warning Project (no link): This NSF-sponsored research examined respondents' sources for obtaining weather forecast and warning information, risk factors associated with driving into flooded roads, and the effects of trauma on perception and decision-making.
