Designer of the Fire Weather Prescribed Burn prototype display

An alert system to help land managers schedule resources for planned burns.

Created initial design mockups and defined project scope.
Design and implementation in progress.

Initial Designer and Co-Developer of the user interface for the Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS)

A system for short-term forecasts of weather and road conditions.
Provides a mechanism for performing "What If?" treatment scenarios.
A joint effort by several National Labs, funded by the Federal Highway Administration.

Established prototype user interface requirements by working with DOT personnel in a focus group.
Developed prototype display in Java, and iterated with constituents to fine-tune content and functionality.
Demonstrated display application at meetings with Federal Highway Administration and Road Weather Project stakeholders.
Designed client-server communications module and dynamic permissions scheme for the interactive version of the display application.
Co-developed web-deployed interactive display application for field demonstrations in 2002, 2003, and 2004.

Project Coordinator for FAA development of JADE, a realtime data display framework

A flexible Java component infrastructure for 2-D displays of weather data.
Funded internally by the Research Applications Program, and by various projects using the technology.

Proposed initial project to Division management for internal funding.
Co-designed and developed package for coordinate space transformations and view space management.
Working with primary architect to establish priorities and find project-based funding.

Technical Lead Aviation Digital Data Service (ADDS)

A free web page serving weather information to the aviation community.
Provides graphic, textual, and interactive content.
Broad user base includes people from general aviation pilots to commercial airline dispatchers.
A joint project with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Aviation Weather Center.
Developed and maintained by a team of seven developers.

Acted as team lead and developer of data delivery system, content generation system, and interactive java displays.
Formalized and maintained operational release procedure.
Acted as liaison to the Aviation Weather Center, where the operational site is maintained and hosted.
Hired and supervised several developers.

Software Engineer II

Software Architect for the DataCanvas java component framework

A framework of java components used to display real-time weather data on zoomable 2-D maps.

Designed and implemented Java component framework for assembling map-based data visualization tools.
Used Java to implement web-based data visualization tools for the aviation community.
Worked with atmospheric scientists to develop java applets for weather data visualization within the Research Applications Program at NCAR.
Designed and implemented generalized server class hierarchy in C++ which is used in the DIDSS framework to build servers for various data products.

Software Engineer / Software Architect / Project Leader

Center for Advanced Decision Support for Water and Environmental Systems (CADSWES), University of Colorado, Boulder. (November 1993 to August 1998)

Software designer and engineer for RiverWare, an object-oriented river modeling tool for a Unix platform.

Used C++ and Galaxy on Solaris to implement model internals and graphical user interface (GUI) components.
Designed and implemented tools for viewing model solution methods and model results.
Worked with a broad range of civil engineers and water administrators to develop requirements and architecture for adding water accounting functionality to RiverWare.
Designed and implemented reusable GUI components using Galaxy inheritance pattern.
Taught training classes to Federal and State employees who use RiverWare for water administration.

Project Leader for the South Platte Water Rights Management System (SPWRMS), a graphically-based, data-centered decision support system with interactive spatial display of the South Platte River Basin.

Worked closely with State of Colorado personnel to bring the software into daily use as an administrative tool.
Designed and implemented database, GUI, modeling, and client-server components of the system in order to make the software meet the final needs of the sponsor.
Developed portions of server application and GUI on Silicon Graphics workstations using C, Embedded-SQL for Informix, Motif, and X.
Developed portions of client application and GUI for Windows 3.1 platform using Visual C++.

Database designer, administrator, and applications programmer for U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Hydrologic Database (HDB), an operational database to support water administration on the Colorado River.

Assisted with design and implementation of database using Ingres.
Worked closely with Water Schedulers at Hoover Dam creating reports to meet needs of daily scheduling tasks.
Developed applications on Unix platform for synchronizing data between administrative sites, using Ingres scripting languages.

Leader, GIS / spatial data efforts at CADSWES, using Arc/Info to create coverages for use in decision support systems developed at CADSWES.

Led month-long wilderness and leadership training courses in Wyoming and Montana.

Geologist
