Numerical Models

Numerical weather prediction (NWP) in RAL involves developing, testing and implementing operational forecast systems throughout the world. Models are used for public weather forecasting, defense and homeland security applications, the prediction of aviation-related hazards, such as in-flight icing and turbulence, and for the support of field programs. In addition, weather models are being coupled with other models that compute cloud ceiling and visibility, transport and dispersion, stream flow and sound propagation. A critical component of this research is the evaluation process performed with independent verification methodologies. In RAL, new verification methods and technologies are constantly being developed, tested and implemented throughout forecasting models, systems and other aspects of our entire program.
